Formula One World Championship
A race meeting of totally contrasting fortunes: Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) McLaren M23 finished fourth and in so doing secured his second World Championship title; Helmuth (Also spelt Helmut) Koinigg (AUT) was tragically killed - in only his second GP start - when his Surtees TS16/3 went off at a corner on lap 10 and ploughed through the steel guardrail at undiminished speed.
United States Grand Prix, Watkins Glen, 6 October 1974.
