James Hunt (McLaren M23-Ford), 1st position leads Patrick Depallier (Tyrrell P34-Ford), retired, Vittorio Brambilla (March 761-Ford), retired, Jochen Mass (McLaren M23-Ford), retired and Jacques Lafitte (Ligier JS5-Matra), 12th position. Both Hunt (Car too wide) and Laffite (Rear aerofoil irregular) were disqualified, but later reinstated after appeal, action.

Niki Lauda withdraws after: Fuji, Japan. 22nd - 24th October 1976

Fuji, Japan. 22nd - 24th October 1976.
Niki Lauda (Ferrari 312T2) withdraws after 2 laps from the Japanese Grand Prix of his own free will, because the driving conditions were atrocious in the wet. This meant that he would lose the drivers World Championship by a single point, portrait.
