Nigel Mansell (Ferrari 641) was hit from behind by Nelson Piquet on the approach to La Source Hairpin. He took Prost's spare car for the second and third starts but exited the race suffering with bad oversteer. Derek Warwick (Lotus 102 Lamborghini) was also hit by teammate Donnelly (thats his bodywork flying). He took the spare and finished in 11th position.

Ayrton Senna leads teammate Gerhard Berger (both McLaren MP4/5B Honda's), Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell (both Ferrari 641's), Riccardo Patrese, Thierry Boutsen (both Williams FW13B Renault's), Nelson Piquet, Alessandro Nannini (both Benetton B190 Ford's), Jean Alesi (Tyrrell 019 Ford), Ivan Capelli (Leyton House CG901 Judd) and Aguri Suzuki (Lola 90 Lamborghini) at the start. In the background Emanuele Pirro (Dallara 190 Ford) hits the pit wall after colliding with David Brabham and involving Philippe Alliot (Ligier JS33B Ford/behind him).
